The BOKU Core Facilities, Core Facility Bioinformatics is currently seeking a

Research Data Infrastructure Engineer

(Reference code 212)

Extent of employment: 40 hours per week
Duration of employment: 1st of December 2025, limited to 2nd of May 2028 (with option for extension)
Workplace: 1190 Vienna
Allocation in compliance with the Collective Agreement for University Staff to job group: IVa
Gross monthly salary: (depending on previous eligible experience) at least: EUR 3.390,30 (payable 14 times per year)

Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, implement and deploy research data management (RDM) tools and services across the entire data life cycle
  • Expand and integrate digital services enabling the processing and analysis of diverse data types, ensuring interoperability and automation
  • Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure as Code and GitOps practices for reproducible deployment of applications, services and storage solutions
  • Containerize research applications and services using Docker, Singularity/Apptainer and deploy on Kubernetes clusters or other container orchestration frameworks
  • Implement, manage and extend open-source solutions for high-performance computing and data management (e.g. iRODS, Galaxy, electronic lab notebooks)
  • Design and develop APIs for automation, integration and interoperability with existing IT systems
  • Work closely with the BOKU-IT and the Research Support, Innovation & Technology Transfer teams to implement authentication, encryption and monitoring solutions, as well as to establish backup and disaster recovery strategies for critical data and services
  • Procure, deploy and manage hardware and software resources within the university IT ecosystem
  • Provide consulting, training and technical support to researchers, data stewards and IT staff
  • Conduct demonstrations, workshops and hands-on sessions to facilitate knowledge transfer
  • Document best practices, workflows and technical procedures to support long-term maintainability

Desirable skills and qualifications

  • Minimum academic qualification: MSc in Computer Science, a related field or equivalent experience
  • Advanced Linux system administration experience
  • Proficiency with relational databases, such as MySQL and PostgreSQL
  • Strong software development skills, including architecture, design, implementation, testing, debugging and code review, primarily in Python; additional languages (e.g. JavaScript) are a plus
  • Experience contributing to or managing open-source software projects
  • Solid understanding of software development best practices and methodologies, including agile project management, test-driven development, version control and code refactoring
  • Demonstrated ability to gather, document and analyze technical requirements effectively
  • Excellent teamwork, communication and organizational skills
  • Experience with web development and designing web interfaces is advantageous
  • Language skills: Fluent in English (spoken and written); knowledge of German is advantageous
